First stop of our aventure in the argentinian patagonia, in El Chalten the national capital of trekking. People say that it's where they have found the best treks of their lives. As little as the town itself has to offer, the surrounding nature offers something unique. Many treks are available, yet the two famous ones are the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. In order to avoid the forecasted bad weather, we decided to do both treks in one day, although unadvised... So here we go for a day trekking, which took us in the end a good 12 to 13h trek depending on the group members for a 40km trail! One of the best treks I have done in may life. The landscape is magninficent and gives you a unique feeling of connexionwith nature that is simply great.
The Fitz Roy is something you CANNOT miss, although the last km is the toughest part of the trek and should only be done if you are in a good physical condition, the view up there is so worth it you'll forget any pain you may have suffered... |

Transport: Once arrived in Los Antiguos close to the Chilean boarder we took a bus to El Chalten with Andesmar which has a special offer of ARS1'200 (72€) for a combined ticket between Los Antiguos to El Chalten and then to El Chalten to El Calafate, with a total discount of ARS390 (almost 24€). The ride to El Chalten lasts about 10h (from 20:00 to 6:30)
Accommodation: we found accommodation in a cheap hostal in town where we paid 10$ per night for a bed in a dormitory with wifi, an equiped kitchen and hot water. The own is not always friendly but the accommodation was not too bad for the price. It is called Arco Iris and is very close to the bus station.
F&B: in order to save money we only cooked at the hostel. In total I paid ARS 145 (about 9€)
Activities: Everything can be done without paying a tour agency. Most of the treks leave from the town and one can enjoy walking without paying anything. For long treks, walking sticks can be rented in town for ARS 50 (3€).
