A beautiful ride from Potosi (4 hours bus ride) through a more deserted landscape where a mixture of red, green, white and yellow can be seen. One of the wonders of the world. During three days we discovered the area, seeing infinity of different landscapes, from desert to mountains, volcanos and lagoons. An incredible place in the middle of nowhere, where despite being dry we encounter cactuses, plants, as well as llamas and vicuñas. Such a unique place on earth that I will let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy the view!
Day 1 - cementery of trains and salar d'UyuniSALAR UYUNI
12000km2 of dry salt desert 120m (or 40 – we’ve been told many different things, like usual in Bolivia…) of depth where water can be found below. Bolivia doesn’t export the salt they extract from this desert, as all other countries around have their own salt access thanks to the ocean. 50 to 70% of the world’s lithium resource is extracted in the Salar – along with other natural metals such as sodium, magnesium and potassium. ISLA INCAHUASI The salar of Uyuni, once Lago minchichi 50000 years ago, holds the Isla Incahuasi (back then an underwater volcano), which means island of the house of the Incas. It once was a place of product exchange and religious ceremonials. Incas would walk to the island once a month by night thanks to the light of the full moon. Today this island is a famous spot to have an unprecedented view over the Salar |
Day 2 - Canyons, desert, and Lagunas
LAGUNA COLORADA
This reserve of 60km square holds 3 different types of of flamencos: Chileno, andino y james; along with 35 000 species of birds. The flamencos are pink due to the pink seaweed they find in the lagoon. |
Day 3 - Geysers, Dali desert and Laguna Verde
GEYSER
1-2km de geyser which only get active in the early morning and late at night due to a temperature shock between warm in the ground and cold outside, enabling a spread of boiling water into the air. |
