Santiago, capital of Chile full of 8 million of inhabitants. A fast paced city, melting-pot of local Chileans, Chileans from afar and expats. A city full of culture, museum, historical buildings, and some parks with sports equipment and fun places to mingle. A city heating over 35° in summer. In a nutshell Santiago is something to experience as everybody has his/her own opinion on liking the city or not. Some of the drawbacks we experienced include long distance and long commutes, an important Americanization presence making the city not very authentic and traditional anymore; and expensive lifestyle. We enjoyed discovering the city through the eyes of locals, walking around its different neighbourhoods, learning all about its rich culture, going to museums and enjoying the swimming pool under such a heat! |

Transportation: a 7 hour bus road from La Serena (CLP10’400 – around 15€)
Accommodation: we were so lucky to find a great couchsurfer close to the city centre who welcomed us for longer than expected always with enthusiasm and availability to do things together.
F&B: Santiago being an expensive city we tried to spare as much as possible. Buying food at the supermarket is more expensive than eating out. A lunch at the market would cost between CLP3’500 and 6’000 (4,5€ to 9€). All in all I’ve spent about CLP40’000 in over a week.
Activities: 7’000 (10€) for Pablo Neruda’s house.
Other: bare in mind transport is also expensive. Public transportation is about 1€ each way (which is affordable!), yet taxis are quickly expensive.
